Chapter Leaders’ Refugee Support Pilot
After a year of preparation, we are ready to begin piloting our refugee support program in Greece and need Medical Brigades Chapter Presidents’ participation to provide feedback and help drive this movement forward. Due to the high demand and limited availability, only Medical Brigades Chapter Presidents who are serious about bringing this program to their campus in 2020 are invited to participate.
Background about our work in Greece
In April 2018, Global Brigades was asked by NGOs operating in Greece to explore the potential for our organization collaborate and provide support to refugee communities. Shortly after, our team traveled to Greece to explore the opportunity and validated that the camps could benefit tremendously from our tenants of development work: holistic model, empowerment of community members, and increased collaboration with local government and NGOs. We believe there is a tremendous opportunity to apply and adapt our model, learn from current actors and bring much needed support into tremendously under resourced camps that are losing partners by the day.
Just like in our other partner countries, we are starting with Medical Brigades to build trust and understand local need better while providing valuable health services. In doing so, we have secured an invitation from KEELPNO (the Greek health ministry) to collaborate directly to support their PHILOS 2, the program responsible for coordinating and providing healthcare services in all camps.
Now we need your participation to pilot this program and engage peers on your campus!
Unlike our traditional brigades that operate in rural underdeveloped communities, brigades in Greece will operate directly in refugee camps. There are over 50 refugee camps in Greece accommodating more than 50,000 residents.
Volunteer Donation Goal
Volunteers do not pay to participate in a pilot. Instead, volunteers fundraise to support Global Brigades’ expansion in Greece. Once a volunteer meets the set Donation Goal, they are eligible to join us on-the-ground to see their fundraising efforts put into action by participating in this Greece pilot brigade.
During this Greece pilot, the volunteer’s ground transportation, food, lodging, and emergency insurance are all covered. The funding that the volunteer raised also supports all the necessary costs for program implementation, such as medications, equipment, local doctors, pharmacists, translators, and support staff.
Airfare is not included in the standard Donation Goal. However, Global Brigades’ travel team can work with volunteers to book airfare and incorporate the airfare expense into the volunteer’s Donation Goal.
